It starts the 40 days before Easter and specifically reminds us that we all do wrong. It's natural for us! Before Jesus ministry got moving, John the baptist said that we needed to confess that we have sin in our lives. He prepared the way for us to realize we needed a Savior. Ash Wednesday is the John the Baptist part of the season. We all have to admit we did/do wrong so that we can ask God to forgive us.
